Sorakaya Pappu (సొరకాయ పప్పు, சுரைக்காய் பருப்பு ,लौकी दाल )

Sorakaya Pappu (సొరకాయ పప్పు, சுரைக்காய் பருப்பு ,लौकी दाल ) is famous in andhra . It can be taken with Rice . It is also called as Anapakaya pappu.

Ingredients :

  • Toor dal / kandi pappu     1/2 cup
  • Bottle gourd / Sorakaya      1 (small size)
  • Tomato    1 chopped
  • Onion   1/2 chopped
  • Green chillies     4 to 6
  • Turmeric powder     ¼ tsp
  • Salt     to taste
  • Tamarind      half lemon size
  • Onion     1/2 chopped
  • Mustard seeds     ¼ tsp
  • Cumin seeds    ¼ tsp
  • Curry leaves     5
  • Asafoetida    a pinch

Method:

1. Peel and cut the bottle gourd into small pieces.
2. Clean and wash the dal.
3. Now add bottle gourd pieces, toor dal, onions, tomatoes, green chillies, tamarind and turmeric powder in a cooking vessel and cook till the dal becomes tender.
4. (If you want you can do this in a pressure cooker also. 2 to 3 whistles are enough)
5. Switch off the stove. Now take a separate pan and heat with 1 tsp of oil.
6. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and asafoetida.
7. When they start to crackle add the chopped onions.
8. Fry till they become to light brown colour.
9. Now add the cooked dal and adjust the salt.
10. Sorakaya pappu is ready.
11. Serve with plain white rice or roti.
